Hoshi no Furusatokan
上越清里星のふるさと館Joetsu Kiyosato Hoshino Furusato-kan: A Gateway to the Stars in Clear-Altitude Skies
Located at an altitude of 482 meters, the Joetsu Kiyosato Hoshino Furusato-kan offers an extraordinary astronomical experience beneath some of the clearest skies in the region.
The facility features the largest reflecting telescope in Niigata Prefecture, with a 65 cm aperture, allowing for detailed celestial observations. Visitors can also enjoy breathtaking visual journeys through space in the 4K digital planetarium, which simulates the night sky across seasons and time periods—from ancient star maps to future constellations—as well as immersive space travel experiences.
The museum also houses a range of exhibits related to space, including the actual Kushii Meteorite, which fell into a rice field in Kaminakajō, Kiyosato Ward, on September 16, 1920. It is designated as a Natural Monument by Niigata Prefecture.
To promote astronomy to a wider audience, the center regularly hosts evening stargazing sessions on weekends, along with family-friendly astronomy workshops and astrophotography classes.
