Shiozawa Seppu Festival

しおざわ雪譜まつり

An enchanting spectacle of snow and fire passing on the traditions of Niigata’s deep winter regions.

The Shiozawa Seppu Festival seeks to celebrate and preserve the culture of Niigata’s snowiest regions. It runs on the 3rd Saturday of February each year in Shiozawa, Uonuma City, which is known for its heavy snowfall. Crowds flock to this remote area to watch and join in the many unique events, like kabuki performances in the snow and the fun “mochi-tossing,” encouraging participation from both young and old.

The climax is the Hyakuyatto Daigoma, a sacred ritual performed by “yamabushi” mountain monks, who offer prayers among flames blazing in the snow. About 500 candles are lit for the ceremony, enveloping the venue in an otherworldly ambiance.

The venue has food stalls and trucks, and there is free sake and amazake (sweet low-alcohol sake) to warm up cold visitors.
