Sado Bugyosho

佐渡奉行所跡

A Glimpse into Gold Rush Governance

The discovery of rich gold veins transformed Sado into a tenryo (a direct territory of the shogunate). This led to the establishment of the Sado Bugyosho (Magistrate's Office) in Aikawa, Sado, in 1603.

This expansive complex, which also housed the magistrate's residence, saw its "Oyakusho" (main office) section meticulously restored in 2000. The restoration faithfully recreates a form of Bugyosho unique to Sado, combining areas for judicial and administrative functions—such as offices and the shirasu (courtroom)—with a "Yoseseriba" (refining area) where gold and silver were processed.
