Tomioka White Museum

南魚沼市トミオカホワイト美術館

A Snow Country museum at the base of a sacred mountain.

Artist Soichiro Tomioka (1922-1994) was born and raised in the Takada district of Joetsu, Niigata, where he developed a keen interest in white snowy landscapes characteristic of this region. He traveled around Japan and the globe to capture these scenes creating a "World of White" on his canvas. Today there are over 500 original oil paintings by Tomioka in the museum's extensive collection that can be seen on display in periodic exhibits curated several times each year.
