The Great White Wisteria of Hachioji

八王寺の大白藤

This enormous 350-year-old wisteria draws visitors from far and wide during its breathtaking bloom.

The Great White Wisteria of Hachioji is located on the grounds of Anryoji Temple in Tsubame City. It’s estimated to be around 350 years old and has a trunk circumference of about 7 meters, earning it designation as a Natural Monument of Niigata. Its countless branches spread out across approximately 30 meters east to west and 20 meters north to south, with a height of around 3 meters. It bursts into bloom from early to mid-May, filling the temple with cascades of elegant white flowers and their sweet scent.
