Gyokudo Kamamoto
無名異焼 玉堂窯元Explore Mumyoi Ware
Located along National Route 350, Gyokudo Kiln features a welcoming gallery and shop. Here, you can do more than just see, touch, and purchase Mumyoi ware – you can also create your own original pottery!
Mumyoi ware is a distinctive type of pottery originating from Sado Island, known for its unique reddish-brown color and remarkable strength. This hue comes from the finely ground, iron-rich ""mumyoi"" clay, a byproduct of Sado's gold and silver mines. The pottery is fired at extremely high temperatures, resulting in a dense, durable finish that becomes smoother and glossier with age and use.
The kiln offers hands-on pottery experiences (for a fee), including both a potter's wheel course and a hand-carving course. This allows visitors to deeply engage with the craft and make a personal memento of their visit.
