Hegisoba is a type of soba that is served in a wooden dish called a “hegi.” Hegisoba is made with funori (seaweed), which gives it the smooth, firm texture that it is known for. The noodles are separated into individual mouthfuls, so it’s easy to eat too!

The Tokamachi Kimono Festival is held every year in spring on May 3 and is a huge, traditional event for this city of textiles. This is also the day of Tokamachi’s coming-of-age ceremony. The center of the city is closed off to automobiles as men and women of all ages don their colorful kimonos and the streets fill to the brim.

The Firewalking Festival is held at the Ookura firewalking funeral hall at the base of Mt. Hakkai. Piled cedar trees are burned in the center of the hall, and people walk barefoot over the bright red coals to rid themselves of their sins, purify themselves, and pray for the safety of their families and good health. Those who wish to participate may do so after the practitioners.

Tsunan Snow Festival

This is the snow festival of Tsunan, one of the world’s most prominent areas for heavy snowfall. You can ride snowmobiles, go on a treasure hunt in the snow, and have fun in ways that are only possible when you have this much snow, and there are also sky lanterns.

Known as a strange custom of Echigo (the former name of Niigata), son-in-law throwing is a Lunar New Year tradition passed down for 600 years in the Yumoto community of Matsunoyama. After the local men who got married in the past year get thrown into the snow, , all visitors to the shrine can say their congratulations while they paint each others’ faces with an ink made of sacred ash mixed with snow. This simple festivity is done to pray for perfect health and family prosperity in the New Year.

Tokamachi Yuki Matsuri was started in 1950 by the citizens and for the citizens of Tokamachi based on the idea “let’s not make snow our enemy, let’s make snow our friend.”
The fireworks that decorate the sky at the finale of the snow-stage carnival make snowy scenery that appears straight out of a fantasy.
