The 82.8-meter long bamboo and straw serpent weighing 2 tons is made by the residents of 54 settlements in the village. The sight of the serpent coiling up at the end of the parade is something to see.

Preserving salmon in salt and hanging them from the eaves of houses is a time honored winter tradition in Murakami. Hanging in rows from the houses, the salmon form their own trails along the streets.
Castle town culture is kept alive even today.

Niigata Prefecture produces the most cut tulips in Japan. This festival takes place on 2 hectares of fields and has 800,000 tulips of approximately 60 different kinds and of many different colors. This colorful expanse of flowers under the spring sky is a great time for families and lovers alike.

Every year on July 6 & 7, the castle town of Murakami hosts a festival of pomp and grandeur only possible in Murakami. Witness a beautiful procession featuring traditional lacquer-framed parade floats called oshagiri, some over 200 years old.
The whole town is enveloped in gaiety by the spectacular Oshagiri (floats).


Starting with a fireworks show above the ocean stretching out over the horizon, there will be a number of events including folk dancing done by the town’s citizens and a parade in which each group brings its own flavor.

Tsukioka Onsen is well-known for its beautifying waters and is well-known across the country for its sulfur content. There are many things to do and see in the vicinity too, like checking out the local breweries and geisha and trying the footbaths, the hand-made rice crackers, and the drinkable spring water and see geisha performance.

A ski resort located on a 1421 meter vertical drop on the west face of Mt. Ninohji, with a point 936 meters high and plenty of high-quality snow. Skiers can go 3km from the mountain and those of intermediate level and up can taste the real thrills of the long course.

Decide who makes the best zoni in Japan! “What’s zoni,” you ask? It’s a traditional soup make of mochi pounded rice cakes and vegetables that’s traditionally eaten on New Year’s Day. The mochi used in this event is made from Shibata-produced koganemochi, made from rice planted and harvested by the children of Shibata. This event, the best known of Shibata’s winter events, attracts over ten thousand visitors every year.

After a traditional ceremony is carried out, floats gorgeously painted with red or black lacquer will be vigorously paraded through the town. Led by a float dedicated to Ofune-sama, the god of ships, nine floats will be marched around to celebrate the port town.
