Cross-island north-south route
A bold and magnificent itinerary that splits the island from north to south to take in Osado, Kosado and the broad Kuninaka Plain. Ride through the wilds of Osado as well as the quiet, hidden gems like Saruhachi and Hamochiosaki in Kosado. You will need to take care with oncoming traffic on some sections where the roads are narrow or are on steep slopes with narrow shoulders. When crossing the Osado mountains, there are no toilets or vending machines except for Donden Highland Lodge near the summit. There are convenience stores and supermarkets on the Kuninaka Plain. There are no vending machines near the Saruhachi Pass. Enjoy the ride but be prepared.

Donden Highland
Long a cattle ranching area of extensive grasslands, this 900m-high plateau is home to rare wild mountain vegetables.

Torigoe Library
A collection in the Saruhachi district, which sits in a valley in the mountains of Kosado. Open to the public.

Wadatsu Shrine
One of Sado's nine shikinaisha shrines, which were listed in the “register of deities” of the Engi-Shiki: procedures of the Engi Era, this is highly-esteemed and bears the moniker Ichinomiya ("first shrine"). Famous as the first shrine to visit at the New Year, when it attracts worshippers from across the island.

Kompon-ji Temple
The Sanmaido Hall within the grounds of Kompon-ji Temple is reputed to be the place where Nichiren (a Buddhist monk and the founder of the Nichiren School) had a debate with monks from other schools, and authored Kaimokusho (The Opening of the Eyes). It is sacred ground for the Nichiren school.

This park is dotted with bird-related facilities. Toki Exchange Plaza is a popular spot for viewing toki up close in an enclosed setting.
