Hodare Festival

Month held March

Event dates

"Hodare," refers to male genitalia, but in this case it signifies "may the rice plants droop heavy with seeds." This festival is an event to pray for a bountiful harvest, fertility, good encounters, for children to grow up well, and for people and their crops to successfully come to fruition. The usually enshrined wooden phallus statue is 2.2 meters long and weighs 600 kg, making it the largest wooden carving in that particular shape in all of Japan. During the festivities, the statue is taken out of its shrine, and newly married brides ride it to signify fertility as it is carried around the festival.
