Echigo Urasa Bishamon-do Naked Jostling Festival

With over 1,200 years of history, this festival is considered of the three strangest festivals in Japan. The highlight of the festival is the crowd of worshipers jostling each other in order to be the first to pay worship to Bishamon, the Buddhist god of war and wealth.


Dates and Times:     Pre-festival night celebration: 
                               March 2nd,
                              
Praying from 6-8 p.m.
                              
Fire-lighting ceremony from 8 p.m.

                              
Festival day: March 3rd,
                              
Daytime events: children’s parade, 
                                 sacred rice cake distribution, etc.
                               
6-11 p.m.: jostling, sacred lantern 
                                 and rice cake distribution, etc.

Location:                 Bishamon-do, Urasa Fukoji Temple grounds, 
                              2495 Urasa,
Minamiuonuma

Directions:              ●5 minutes by foot from JR Urasa Station on the Joetsu Line
                             ●15 minutes by car on route 17 from the Koide 
                                or Muikamachi IC on the Kanetsu Expressway.
