Nagaoka Festival is held from August 1 to August 3. See portable shrine float parades and folk dance processions, plus the main attraction of the large-scale fireworks display that takes place over the Shinano River. 650 meter giant sanshakudama fireworks, waterfall and volcano fireworks, and 20,000 smaller shakudama fireworks light up the night sky.

Be inspired in the place that formed the setting of the NHK historical drama, Tenchijin.
Enjoy the historical romance as you watch the procession of men dressed as samurais and the reenactment of the Battles of Kawanakajima.


The 82.8-meter long bamboo and straw serpent weighing 2 tons is made by the residents of 54 settlements in the village. The sight of the serpent coiling up at the end of the parade is something to see.


Admire beautifully full-blossomed sacred lotuses at the water’s edge.
The best time to see the Orient’s biggest and most beautiful sacred lotus blossoms in Takada Park. From the 7th -10th you can taste German beer and cuisine at the ‘Jyoetsu Oktoberfest’.

See the brave clashing of bulls that weight over a ton!
Yamakoshi is the only place on Honshu where you can see this traditional event.
Unlike Western bullfighting, no bulls are killed in Japanese bullfighting. Instead of facing humans, the bulls fight each other until one gets too tired to continue.

The Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale is a massive and expansive international art festival held once every three years in the woodlands of the Echigo-Tsumari region (Tokamachi and Tsunan) since 2000.

The Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale began with the aim of creating activities that would continuously open up new prospects for the area, and the artists cooperate with the residents to create works of art with local roots. At this time, many permanent works of art and base facilities remain as assets all over the region.

The Echigo-Tsumari area (the municipalities of Tokamachi and Tsunan in Niigata Prefecture), about 760 square kilometers


Starting with April’s Island Festival, enjoy traditional festivals and events all year round where you can taste the wonders of the Sea of Japan. At the Ogi Port Festival, you can see Tarai boat races and Kojishimai dances.


The Ojiya Festival is a grand event spread out over three days, focusing on the citizens of Ojiya. On the first day there will be a large folk dance procession, and the second day will have a Karakuri lantern parade and a fireworks display. The third day will conclude with another Karakuri lantern parade and Bon dancing.
