Every year on July 6 & 7, the castle town of Murakami hosts a festival of pomp and grandeur only possible in Murakami. Witness a beautiful procession featuring traditional lacquer-framed parade floats called oshagiri, some over 200 years old.
The whole town is enveloped in gaiety by the spectacular Oshagiri (floats).

A festival featuring folk dance processions and traditional portable shrine parade floats. On the final day see a large scale fireworks display with 300 shakudama fireworks. The beautiful and powerful fireworks over the ocean are a sight worth seeing.

With over 300 fireworks set off one after another and 100 fireworks set off at once all above the Sea of Japan, this fireworks display is truly overwhelming to see. About 15,000 fireworks will color the night sky.

Directions 15 minutes by car from JR Ojiya Station (Joetsu Line); shuttle buses will be available.
Shuttle buses will run from Sun Plaza in Ojiya City to the Togyujo via Ojiya Station.

See the brave clashing of bulls that weight over a ton!
Yamakoshi is the only place on Honshu where you can see this traditional event.
Unlike Western bullfighting, no bulls are killed in Japanese bullfighting. Instead of facing humans, the bulls fight each other until one gets too tired to continue.

From ancient times, Niigata has had a strong connection with water and land as a port town and a major river town. This connection is the theme for the Water and Land Art Festival. Artists from around the world will display their artwork in the lower Shinano River area in the heart of Niigata City.
