This is a magical festival which brings to life the traditions of Edo period marriages.
Just as the sun is setting in the western sky, the lights in town are turned off and torches and lanterns are used to create a bewitching atmosphere. At the center of it all is a new bride, playing the role of the fox, who, along with her 108 attendants parades from Sumiyoshi Shrine to Kirinyama Park for the banquet.

Niigata Prefecture produces the most cut tulips in Japan. This festival takes place on 2 hectares of fields and has 800,000 tulips of approximately 60 different kinds and of many different colors. This colorful expanse of flowers under the spring sky is a great time for families and lovers alike.

The Tokamachi Kimono Festival is held every year in spring on May 3 and is a huge, traditional event for this city of textiles. This is also the day of Tokamachi’s coming-of-age ceremony. The center of the city is closed off to automobiles as men and women of all ages don their colorful kimonos and the streets fill to the brim.

When: May 3, 2017 (Wed.), 11AM-3PM

Directions 15 minutes by car from JR Ojiya Station (Joetsu Line); shuttle buses will be available.
Shuttle buses will run from Sun Plaza in Ojiya City to the Togyujo via Ojiya Station.

See the brave clashing of bulls that weight over a ton!
Yamakoshi is the only place on Honshu where you can see this traditional event.
Unlike Western bullfighting, no bulls are killed in Japanese bullfighting. Instead of facing humans, the bulls fight each other until one gets too tired to continue.

This year marks the 12th Sponichi Sado Long Ride 210. The course is split into 4 distance categories, including a 210 km course that circles the island and a 40 km course that focuses on cuisine and tourist spots. Participants can choose a target distance that fits their leg strength and goals. Experience nature like you never can in a big city, and enjoy the vast blue sky, the blue ocean, the towering crags, and the dazzling greenery. Go for a ride and breathe it all in.

The Firewalking Festival is held at the Ookura firewalking funeral hall at the base of Mt. Hakkai. Piled cedar trees are burned in the center of the hall, and people walk barefoot over the bright red coals to rid themselves of their sins, purify themselves, and pray for the safety of their families and good health. Those who wish to participate may do so after the practitioners.
